Bad News for Front Row Users from Technology Posts
March 9, 2006
If you are a user of Front Row on an unsupported Mac, get ready for some bad news.  The maker of Front Row Enabler has been hit with a cease and desist order from Apple Legal.  As of now, Front Row Enabler is no longer available from andrewescobar.com.

While Apple makes its updates to Front Row available on its web site, the installer is written to only function on "supported" Macs.  This means that, while anyone can download the installer, unless you have the correct hardware you will not be able to install it.  As we have reported in the past, Front Row Enabler allows users to remove this restriction and install the software on almost any Mac.

This is a sad day for all unsupported Front Row users.  If you were not lucky enough to download the last release of Front Row Enabler (version 1.2.1), it will become increasingly difficult to find.  If you act fast, you might be able to find it circulating on the bittorrent servers before is disappears into obscurity.  Version 1.2.1 makes it possible to install Apple's latest Bonjour compatible release of Front Row, also version 1.2.1.

While FrontRow is way cool, it's got some serious limitations, like it won't play all media formats. Give MediaCentral by Equinux http://www.equinux.com/us/products/mediacentral/in... a shot - it's got my vote as one of the best "inspired by Apple" products in a long time. I mean, come on - Apple's copied enough shareware programs in the last few years, and people I'm honored to call friends have lost shareware sales because of Apple. Turnabout is fair play. :>) Best part? IT'S FREEWARE.
