Most Windows users find it hard to keep up to date with the latest security patches. On the Mac side, security updates are must more few and far between. This week Apple released a system update for OS X that repairs a security exploit discovered recently.
Use the Software Update Preference Pane to download and install Security Update 2003-07-14. It repairs a problem in OS Xs built-in screen saver that could compromise your systems security.
Many users use the screen saver to lock their terminal while they are away. Under normal circumstances, without the correct password, the system is inaccessible. Two weeks ago, a buffer overflow was discovered that makes it fairly easy to crash the screen saver and gain access to the operating system.
Enter any single character into the password field and hold the key down for approximately 3-4 minutes. Next hit the enter (return) key. The screensaver crashes out and allows access to the OS. Please note that this only applies to the screen saver. This is not an issue with the operating systems login screen.
Apple was quick to address the problem when it was discovered, but a system patch is only useful if users install it. This is just another good example of why it is important to run Software Update on a regular basis.
