Access the Internet Via Cingular and a Bluetooth Phone

Step 1:
Download and install the necessary modem scripts. The modem script is not part of the default install. An archive of modem scripts was originally supplied by http://www.taniwha.org.uk/, and is available at this link. Should that link become unavailable, they have also been mirrored here.

Once you have downloaded the scripts, install them by placing them in /Library/Modem Scripts.

Step 2:
Be sure that Bluetooth has been activated on your phone. Also be sure that no other Bluetooth devices are attached. Most phones are only capable of connecting to one Bluetooth device at a time. If you normally connect to a wireless headset, be sure it is powered off. This reduces troubleshooting later.

Step 3:
Sign up for Cingular's Data Connect with Voice plan. It is required in order to use your phone as a modem. In my case, there was a great deal of confusion over which data plan was required. It took quite a bit of time with Cingular tech support before we even found out that I had been signed up for the incorrect data plan.

UPDATE: 6/23/05
CFS wrote me concerning his experiences with Cingular. He reports that the Data Connect package is now referred to simply as "Laptop Connect." Given the confusion over at Cingular, you may want to refer to the package under either name and see if you can get on the same page as your customer service rep. :-)

In order to be clear, sign up for the Data Connect with Voice. It is allows you to use your phone as a modem as well as a phone. Simply selecting Data Connect is not enough. According to Cingular, this will leave you phone without voice service.

Step 4:
Pair the Bluetooth phone with the computer. This is done in the Bluetooth preference pane of the System Preferences panel.

If the phone is already paired, select the phone and click Configure. Then, be sure to select the checkbox to allow the computer to access the Internet via the phone's data connection.

Step 5:
Fill in the fields as shown below. Please note that the fields are case sensitive. The password, in all upper case, is: CINGULAR1. I have has consistent luck with my Motorola Razr and the script shown below. Discussion online has shown that others have seen higher performance using other scripts from the archive downloaded in Step 1. Some experimentation may be necessary.

Step 6:
The configurations should be successful. Quit the Bluetooth Setup Assistant.

Step 7:
Open the Network Preference Pane. You may see a message stating that a new network port has been detected. If you do not, you should already see your phone listed under Bluetooth. Double click on Bluetooth.

Step 8:
Fill in the fields as shown below. Note that the fields are case sensitive. As before, the password is CINGULAR1.

Cingular recommends filling in the account name of ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM, but as I understand it, ISPDA@CINGULARGPRS.COM is also a valid option and performance may vary.

Once complete, click PPP Options.

Step 9:
Uncheck Send PPP Echo Packets, Use RCP Header Compression, and Connect Using Terminal Window if they are checked. Then click OK.

Step 10:
Click on the Bluetooth Modem tab and be sure to select the same modem you selected in the Bluetooth Setup Assistant. Also be sure to uncheck the boxes for Enable Error Correction as well as Wait For Dial Tone. It may also be useful to check the box beside Show Bluetooth Status in Menu Bar.

Step 11:
Next click the TCP/IP tab. Be sure Configure IPv4 is set to Using PPP. Also click Configure IPv6... and disable it.

Step 12:
Click Apply Now.

Step 13:
Open the Internet Connect application located in the Applications folder. Select the Bluetooth icon and all of the information should be filled in with that provided in previous screens. Just click Connect, and you should be online. The stages of the connection should look similar that those used with a normal dial-up modem.

If all goes well, a Bluetooth equipped Macintosh should now be able to connect to the Internet via the cell phone. The connection is no where close to broadband, but it is useful in an emergency, or for anyone who travels frequently.
